Hat Guided Knit Along (GKAL) (Parts 1, 2 and 3)



What You Will Learn:

We will learn hat skills while knitting a basic hat in DK weight yarn.  In this three-part guided knit along (GKAL), you will:
  • review how to select a hat size
  • cast on and join work for working in the round
  • learn to use circular and double pointed needles or magic loop
  • produce stitches in the round and decrease in the round
  • improve your skills to read and follow a pattern

Prerequisite Skills:

This is an advanced beginner level GKAL designed to further develop skills taught in the AYLR “Let’s Begin” and “Let’s Continue” workshops. If you haven’t completed these, you should be comfortable with basic knitting terms, casting on (long-tail), binding off, producing and distinguishing between knit stitches and purl stitches, producing simple combinations of knits and purls, and working in the round.  You should also have basic pattern-reading skills.

Supplies Needed:

We request that you purchase your class project yarn from the shop. You will receive a one-time 10% discount on your project yarn for the class:
  • 230-250 yards of DK weight yarn
  • US size 3 (3.25mm) - 16-inch circular needle
  • US size 5 (3.75mm) - 16-inch circular needle
  • US size 5 (3.75mm) - double pointed needles OR 32-inch or longer circular needle for magic loop
  • Knitting tool box including stitch markers, darning needle and measuring tape
  • Paper and pen/pencil for taking notes (optional)
  • Blakely Hat pattern (included in the cost of the GKAL - you will receive a copy of the pattern when you come to the first session)

Instructor Bio: Ellen retired from a career in IT with a large telecommunications company in 2015. She discovered her love of knitting in 1999 when her daughter, who was a new Harry Potter fan, needed a Gryffindor house scarf, and at the time, they were unavailable for purchase. Ellen loves to learn new knitting techniques and has been focusing on Fair Isle knitting for the last few years. She's even gotten to visit the Shetland Islands, the home of Fair Isle knitting. Ellen has fun leading knit-alongs and teaching knitting to others.
