Dare to DPN: Learn to Use Double Pointed Needles


Have you wanted to make socks, mitts, hats, or toys such as birds or Christmas balls?  Double pointed needles are one method to knit things in the round that are too small for circular needles.  In this class, we will explore and learn to use double pointed needles and practice this new technique.


In this class, you will:

  • Learn to cast on using Double Pointed Needles (DPNs) and join to work in the round
  • Learn to make an i-Cord using DPNs
  • Discuss when and how best to switch to DPNs when working the top of a hat
  • Start a project which will include working in the round, decreases, ribbing and stockinette stitches

Materials Needed

  • 1 skein worsted weight yarn in color of your choice (light color recommended)
  • US size 7 (4.5mm) or 8 (5.0mm) - 6" or 8" double pointed needles (we recommend Knitters Pride Dreamz wood needles)
  • Stitch markers
  • Darning/tapestry needle

Minimum to Run Class:  3 attendees.

Requirements: You should be able to cast on, knit, purl, k2tog and bind off without instruction.
Instructor: Ellen H
Instructor Bio: Ellen retired from a career in IT with a large telecommunications company in 2015. She discovered her love of knitting in 1999 when her daughter, who was a new Harry Potter fan, needed a Gryffindor house scarf, and at the time, they were unavailable for purchase. Ellen loves to learn new knitting techniques and has been focusing on Fair Isle knitting for the last few years. She?s even gotten to visit the Shetland Islands, the home of Fair Isle knitting. Ellen has fun leading knit-a-longs and teaching knitting to others.
